Why Select Blinds for Windows?

Blinds are slightly more popular than curtains in homes for several reasons. They are better at blocking out light and some noise. This makes them ideal for bedrooms, especially for those who work nights. People cannot see through blinds, so they provide the maximum level of privacy. That is another reason to have them in the bedroom, and they also work well in bathrooms.

Low Maintenance

Depending on the material of the blinds, there is very little maintenance involved. Most only require an occasional dusting to look great. Curtains have to be taken down, washed, dried, and ironed. Then they have to go back up. That process takes more time and effort.

The exception is blinds made from real wood. These may need polishing to keep them from drying out and cracking during sun exposure. Fading may also be an issue. The climate may contribute to wood warping or rotting. A dry climate, such as Arizona, will be fine when it is not monsoon season. Real wood is not ideal for blinds in Denver, Northern New England, or coastal areas.

Materials

Blinds can be made of real wood, aluminum, faux wood, vinyl, and even fabric. Of the two types of woods, faux has more advantages than real. They are moisture resistant, do not fade, and are much more durable. Faux wood would only need to be dusted. This material is also more versatile, as it comes in more colors, grains, finishes, and textures than real wood.

Aluminum and vinyl blinds are lightweight and cost-effective. They do not block out as much light as wood ones but will provide a certain degree of privacy. Vinyl is mostly used for vertical blinds that are ideal for covering large windows and sliding doors. Aluminum ones are more commonly called mini blinds and are used more in commercial locations than residential ones.

Custom Blinds

While shades, curtains, and other options for window coverings can easily be purchased in department stores, it is better to have blinds custom designed and fitted. They can be customized to suit any shape window but will look tacky if simply cut to fit. The customization process, depending on where you go, is not expensive, contrary to popular belief. An in-home consultation is free, so there is no reason not to consider having the blinds custom made and installed. The proper measuring and installation techniques make a significant difference in the way the blinds look and function.
